Welcome to the Prospect Cross Country web site Home Page

Prospect Wants, you!

Cross Country is a fall sport that consists of teams of seven runners, but only the top five are scored. And, like Golf, low score wins. A typical high school race ranges in distance from 2.0-3.1 miles in length over terrain that varies, so think of running up and down hills. Our average work-out ranges from 4-7 miles. We run together during the summer months to get ready for the starting gun in fall and build that team spirit and unity.

Many Cross Country runners are “over-achievers” who not only run for the school but play in the band, carry a high GPA or are free spirits who enjoy competition in a non-traditional sport. Our athletes compete at the State level, we have been the only fall team to send teams to CCS the last two years, and we have had three of our students compete at the State Championship the last two years. With two returning state meet runners we are looking at adding talented runners to fill out the squads. (Two of our ladies also competed and won individual league championships in track.) * As a matter of fact our lady distance runners were undefeated in track!! Men won 19 of 21 races.

Training Tips:

  • Be sure to hydrate properly especially on these hot days. Runners should be drinking 3-4 quarts a day.
  • Eat a healthy lunch during the school day.
  • Keep a training log/diary of your workouts.
  • Consistency is the key to improvement.
  • Be careful not to add mileage too quickly. A good guideline is not to increase your weekly total mileage more than 10% a week. Example: If you ran 20 miles last week, you would want to run no more than 22 miles or so the following week. This guideline will keep you from adding mileage too quickly and getting injured.

Scoring a Cross Country Meet

In cross country, seven people make up a team. The team with the lowest score wins. The first place runner earns one point, the second place runner earns two points, etc. The top five runners on a team count for scoring purposes. A "perfect" cross country team score would be 15 points. The remaining two runners can displace the scoring runners from other teams.
